House Extension, Inis Clair
A brief for a ground floor bedroom that became a transformed living area.
A ground floor bedroom is a common requirement for homeowners but usually has a risk of detracting from the living spaces when built on ad hoc. So, rather than build a new bedroom, the proposal was to convert the existing sitting room into the bedroom and to extend a new open plan living space from the existing kitchen.
The design solution maximises light and focuses on specific views of nearby greenery. Large bi-folding doors open out to a south facing deck. A long ribbon window captures a cropped view of the well pruned shrubs at the boundary wall. A tall north facing window and rooflight is placed such that the trees to the north can be viewed from the space. This rooflight captures late afternoon light after the sun moves around to the west of the house.
